Who Is The Best Person To Teach You To Drive?

Friends and Family

This can seem like the cheapest option.  Dad or Mum has been driving for years, never had an accident, all in all a Good Driver.  The problem with this approach is that being a Good Driver doesn`t necessarily make someone a good teacher.  Many Good Drivers will cheerfully admit that they would never pass a test now!  So how on earth can they possibly teach YOU to A. pass the test, and B. become a safe, competent driver?

Another consideration is the family car.  Is it suitable for learning to drive?  How much will the insurance cost?  If an emergency situation were to occur, how quickly could your accompanying driver take control?

A Professional Driving Instructor

Driving Instructors fall into two catagories -

                           ADI (Approved Driving Instructor)

                           PDI (Potential Driving Instructor)

An ADI has been checked, tested and approved by the Driving Standards Agency as competent to teach the lifetime skill of driving. He or she will have passed all three of the required examinations, Theory, Driving Ability and Instructional Ability. They will also be C.R.B. checked.

A professional ADI will use a fully insured, properly maintained, modern Dual Controlled car.

A PDI will have passed the first two examinations and been granted a Provisional Licence to teach.  This is valid for 6 months, during which time the third (Instructional Ability) test must be passed.  After this time the licence expires and the PDI is not able to continue teaching.

What to look for when choosing an Instructor.

The best way to choose an instructor is to ask friends and family.  Find out who they learned with and if they would recommend him or her.

If this isn`t possible then do a web search, find a local instructor who uses the type of car you would like to learn in.  When you call ask some simple questions - How long have you been an instructor?  Are you qualified?  What are your hours of business?  Do you offer help with the Theory Test?  Are your lessons a full hour?  Do you piggy back, ie. expect you to run the previous person home as part of your lesson?

You`ll notice I haven`t included the most obvious and frequently asked question!  How much do you charge?

Driving lessons are like most things in life, you get what you pay for.  Whilst cheap lessons may seem like like a bargain, you have ask yourself why that instructor values him or herself so low?  You could well find you end up paying more because you need far more hours with a cheap instructor!
