Independent Driving FAQs
Why has independent driving been introduced?
The aims of introducing independent driving are to ensure that the test candidate is able to maintain a safe standard of driving without the prompt provided whenever the examiner gives a direction.
How will the examiner conduct this part of the test?
In the independent section of the test you will be asked to drive for about 10 minutes without directions from the examiner. This will be achieved by the examiner asking you to either follow a series of directions, follow traffic signs, or a combination of both.
A (very) simple diagram may be used to support these instructions. This is not a test of navigation so you will be able to ask for the directions again should you forget where you are going.
What happens if you take a wrong turning?
Should you go off the independent driving route it won't affect the result of the test unless a driving fault is committed. If you go off the route or take a wrong turning, the examiner will help you to get back on the route.
What happens if you can't see the directional signs?
If there are poor or obscured traffic signs, the examiner will give you directions until you can see the next traffic sign.
Can the candidate use Sat Nav?
You can't use a sat nav for independent driving.
Another Change
There is also another change that will take place. Instead of being required to do two reversing exercises (from turn in the road, reverse around a corner, parallel parking, bay parking ) during the practical test you will now only be required to do one of these.
