Apply for a Provisional Driving Licence.

To be granted a Provisional Driving Licence you must be 17 years old or more and able to read a number plate at the prescribed distance. The distance requirement for the eyesight test using old style number plates is 20.5 metres or 20 metres if the new-style number plate is used. New-style number plates are easily identifiable starting with two letters eg AB 51 ABC.

You can apply for a license before your 17th birthday but it will not come into force until you reach 17.Further details can be found HERE

Pass the Theory Test.

You will need to study hard to pass the Theory Test, which also includes the Hazard Perception. The Theory Test comprises 50 multi-choice questions with a minimum pass mark of 43. Further details HERE

The Hazard Perception Test.

This part of the theory test requires you to view 14 video clips on the computer screen of approximately one minute each. You are required to watch these clips as if you were the driver. There will be 15 hazards to find - at least one on each clip. However, one clip will have 2 hazards. For further details click HERE

Driving Lessons.

You should take a course of Driving Lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) and try to get private practice as well! You can find out if your instructor is qualified by asking to see their green badge. If they have a pink badge it means they have yet to pass the `Part Three` test and are a trainee. If they have no badge they are not on the Register of Approved Driving Instructors and are teaching illegally! 

Pass the Practical Driving Test

If you take sufficient lessons coupled with correct preparation the driving test should not be a daunting experience. On average, people who pass the test have had 45 hours of tuition and 22 hours private practice. The Driving Test lasts about 40 minutes and takes in all types of road from town driving to fast dual carriageways. Also included will be one manouvre, the examiner will choose from a bay park, parallel park, corner reverse or turn in the road. For further details click HERE

Please Note- After 4th October 2010 a very important change will be taking place to the driving test, with the introduction of the  "Independant Drive"  For approxomately 8 minutes the candidate will be asked to follow road signs, or will be given a series of directions, backed up with a diagram. Only one of the manouvres will be carried out, instead of two.

After the Test

After you have passed your Driving Test don't make the mistake of thinking you have nothing else to learn! Every year 1,000 people die in road traffic accidents involving a young driver, hence cheap young drivers car insurance is a rarely realised promise. Research shows that it takes 2 years from passing the driving test before a new driver's accident liability falls by less than 50%. Under the New Drivers Act 1997 newly qualified drivers who receive 6 or more penalty points on their driving licence within 2 years of passing their practical driving test will have their licence revoked. To get their licence back they'll first have to reapply for their provisional driving licence, pay for even more driving lessons and then re-take the theory & practical tests.
